What is Aquaponics?Aquaponics is a systematic process of growing plants for food from water of fish living in tanks in their “natural environment.” The fish work providing what is needed to grow plants for food in all seasons by students, families and even farmers.Implemented properly, aquaponics has proven to be an outstanding learning tool utilizing science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM). This extraordinary interactive learning unlocks many doors for students of all ages. The program challenges participants to work independently and cooperatively through a hands-on inquiry method of learning. As students move from one level to the next level of responsibility, they develop a foundation for business principles, learn to work as team members and form a safe harbor for leaders to rise to their potential.Shannon Johnston, author, entrepreneur, radio host, and speaker was introduced to aquaponics by people who approached him to act as a consultant for developing a business for aquaponic systems. As the grandson of a farmer, Shannon grew up learning about growing vegetables and harvesting them but aquaponics was a new concept for him. Learning more about aquaponics, his interest began to take a new path, one which led him to sharing his knowledge with others interested in pursuing a different way to learn and produce food in all seasons.
